About Africa Talks

Initially broadcast on Columbia Access Television in Columbia, Missouri, Africa Talks was a talk show profiling people and issues affecting the continent of Africa. The show ranged from hard-hitting political coverage to light-hearted human interest stories. Guests from the U.S. and abroad were invited.

Africa-Talks.com is a multimedia news site tracking various issues. It provides nuanced commentary and detailed analysis on critical issues facing Africa and the global African Diaspora.

ABOUT FOUNDER AND EDITOR SALEM SOLOMON

Salem Solomon (Facebook, Twitter) is a digital journalist based in Washington D.C. She is a multimedia journalist with years of experience in television, radio, online and print journalism. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, Reuters, The Tampa Bay Times, Global Journalist, KBIA.org, Newsy.com and other media outlets.

She has commented on current events in The Atlantic, Al-Jazeera and Bloomberg. She got her start in her home country of Eritrea working in the English-language department of the state-owned television station Eri-TV. There, she anchored the nightly news and translated, edited, and produced programs.

In spring 2015, she completed her professional practicum in Washington, D.C. at the Voice of America’s Horn of Africa Service and returned in August as a full-time journalist.

Previously, she worked as a writer at the Tampa Bay Business Journal producing in-depth feature stories and online content. She produced content for Morning Edition, a five-times-a-week business news roundup emailed to readers in the Tampa Bay area. She also submitted freelance articles to the American City Business Journals.

She posts journalism-related content and commentaries on Medium and her blog “Eyes Wide Open.”

She is a graduate student at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg and, previously, a teaching assistant and instructional designer in the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, where she helped teach feature writing, multimedia reporting and other classes taught by Dr. Mark Walters.
